The calculation
NRR = (starting MRR + expansion + reactivation − contraction − churn) ÷ starting MRR × 100
Rounded for display. Read the assumptions below before comparing this result with your billing system.
What this number includes
- Use one currency and one completed measurement period. Do not mix monthly movements with annual totals.
- Exclude new-customer revenue and one-time payments. Use consistent treatment of discounts and past-due accounts.
- Reactivation is included when supplied, following the linked ChartMogul report definition. Strict starting-cohort retention can differ; set reactivation to zero if your policy excludes it.
- This is an unsegmented movement calculation. Plan switches and partial-period projections require additional logic.

A worked example
Illustrative example: (50,000 + 8,000 + 1,000 − 2,000 − 3,000) ÷ 50,000 = 108% NRR.
Can NRR exceed 100%?
Yes. Expansion and reactivation can exceed contraction and churn. That says existing-customer revenue grew; it does not by itself establish profitability.
Does NRR include new customers?
No. New business would obscure how well you retain and grow existing-customer revenue. Track acquisition separately.
